Ask BSB: What Is a Hydronic Baseboard Heater?

Are you a new homeowner that wants an alternative to central heating? Is your current home’s heating system just not cutting it? The answer is down on your baseboard.

Hydronic baseboard heating—via a hydronic baseboard heateris the tried-and-true solution that you’ve been looking for. But what is a hydronic baseboard heater, and is it really an effective solution for my home?

Before you find the answer, let’s get down to basics.

Baseboard Heating 101

Water is one of the most basic and versatile elements on planet Earth. It quenches your thirst, washes your laundry, and can even keep the lights on with sophisticated hydroelectric power.

Simply put, water’s capacity for heat conductivity is much better than the air. It’s also much more constant, remaining hot after the heat source has been turned off or removed from the equation altogether. Hydronic heating makes the most of these benefits, powering your home in a more efficient manner than electric-based central heating

But that’s far from the only benefit. Hydronic heating is a radiant heat source in a smaller, enclosed system. Aka, it doesn’t require the constant filter changes and routine maintenance that central heating does, making it cleaner and easier to look after.

There’s a hidden charm and timeless appeal with hydronic baseboard heating. Want the full list of benefits and an in-depth comparison with central heating?

How Do I Maintain My Baseboard Heating?

As we mentioned earlier, hydronic baseboard heating is easy to keep up with. Here are three ways to maintain your baseboard heating unit:

  1. Check the boiler or furnace once a year: The boiler and furnace are the silent superstars that keep your baseboard heating on. But over time, calcium deposits and rust can accumulate on these components, becoming a bigger issue if left unchecked. To prevent any problems, call a qualified technician for a checkup annually. You can also clean any buildup yourself as you notice it.

  2. Bleed the air once a year: When air gets inside the unit, it can cause your system to run inefficiently. Simply find the air release valve and open it to let the air out. Close the valve once water begins to come out.

  3. Secure the pipes as needed: Have you heard any clanking or rattling coming from your unit? It may be the pipes hitting something inside. Securing the pipes with heat-proof insulation—like spray foam—will solve this problem.
