Cooler air settles near the floor and enters through the bottom of the heater. As it passes over the hot element and fins, it warms and rises through the top opening.

That rising air draws more cool air into the heater, creating a continuous convection cycle without a fan.

4. The Thermostat Turns the Heater Off

Once the room reaches the selected temperature, the thermostat stops the flow of electricity to the heating element. The heater cycles on again when the room begins to cool.

  • A resistance heating element

  • A protective metal enclosure
  • Lower air-intake and upper outlet openings

How Does an Electric Baseboard Thermostat Work?

An electric baseboard thermostat usually switches the heater fully on and off rather than adjusting the element to different heat levels.

When the room is below the desired temperature, the heater turns on. When the thermostat detects that the room has reached the setpoint, it turns off.

Electronic thermostats often maintain more consistent temperatures than older mechanical models. Programmable and compatible smart thermostats may also help reduce energy use by lowering temperatures when a room is unoccupied.

Electric and hydronic baseboard heaters may look similar, but they produce heat differently.

A central hydronic system uses a boiler to heat water, which then circulates through pipes and finned tubing inside the baseboard enclosures. Some self-contained electric heaters use sealed heat-transfer fluid. These are still electric heaters because electricity is the energy source, but they should not be confused with boiler-based hydronic systems.

Is Electric Baseboard Heating Efficient?

Nearly all the electricity that reaches an electric resistance heater is converted into heat at the point of use. Electric baseboard systems also avoid duct losses and make zoned temperature control possible.

Energy conversion and operating costs are not the same thing.

Wattage ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × electricity rate = estimated cost

For example, a 1,500-watt heater running for eight total hours uses:

1,500 ÷ 1,000 × 8 = 12 kilowatt-hours

Multiply 12 by the electricity rate shown on your utility bill.

Turning the thermostat far above the desired temperature will not heat the room faster. It will only make the heater run longer.

Watch for Warning Signs
